Delhi Book Fair 2014: My visit

As always, I religiously visited the book fair in my city.

Today was the last day of the fair, and I was expecting to be caught in multitudes of crowds. But contrary to my expectations, I had a relatively easy journey, what with the lesser footfall this year.
Now the debate about the pros and cons of the e-book culture that ensues is an altogether different story, let's just save that for another day.
So, while I had to travel for more than an hour, (and as has been always been ceremoniously customary, it rained) and braved the weather, it was a heavenly bliss to be finally surrounded by books.

As you may have guessed by now, I thronged to all stalls and halls, and it was even dizzying to be surrounded by soooo many books. Since it was the last day, "sale/discount" on classics was a pleasure. And I got myself more books than I had thought possible within my budget.

I dont think I will be buying anymore classics for a year. (I know I know, even if I promise, I will budge pretty soon)

The temptation of the hard-bound classics, the undying appeal of the boxsets, getting free bookish stuff like writing pads and bookmarks. This is what book fair is all about.

You may also have gauged that it was, indeed, a tiring day. So, I take leave with this brief blog.
With the realization that:

Author Spotlight and Interview: Janice Turber and Barbara Swicegood

Interview

Lets begin by talking about your book, "Stuck in the yuck". What was it like to document what you deal with in your lives?

We have seen through our work he joy of helping those in pain to heal. We know that publishing a book of our techniques can help so many more people.so it felt good to provide hope for those who have experienced trauma which resulted in anxiety and/or depression.

I must say, it is a noble thing to do, assist people through their difficult times. Does it not affect you sometimes; people narrating their sad stories?

Although it is horrible to hear the sad things that our clients have gone through, this work that we do is our destiny and mission in life. It brings us much happiness and joy to see the trauma lifting and healing so that an individual’s life can become an amazing journey filled with love rather than pain.

Awareness precedes change. unless one is aware of the problem, the solution cannot be designed. How do you suggest people acknowledge it if something goes wrong in their life?

People need to start noticing and paying attention to all aspects of life, such as their health, relationships, work, service, family and other arenas. If these arenas are filled with worry most of the times, then something deeper is causing the problems. People must be willing in becoming a detective in their own life and search for clues to their unhappiness. This is all part of the process of acknowledging and becoming more intimately aware of what is occurring. Times of intense pain seem to be the catalyst that propels most people to look for answers and solutions to problems in their lives.

How was the experience writing this book? co-authoring? the theme? And everything else?

We are a great team and enjoy working and writing together. Barbara created the title and the theme is what we believe in and use in our practice and personal lives daily.

What are the other books you two have authored?

We wrote Moving through life with Grace: From Caterpillar to Butterfly. We have also written numerous articles and contributed to newsletters.

Thanks for your time and attention in answering me. Hope your books do the trick and help people cope with traumatic incidents in life.

Author Spotlight and Interview: Deepak Kripal

Interview

Q. Tell us something about yourself ? How did you decide for a transition from a doctor to a writer?
I am sort of an explorer. I like to hear good stories, travel into the wild with my friends, spending quality time with my family, play cricket in spare time which I haven’t had for 6-7 years! I am proud to be a doctor. And I am ambitious in a strange way. I mean not in the material sense. I have a spiritual side, apart from 5-6 more sides I am yet to discover!

Q. What does writing mean to you?

The 3-4 months I spent visualising and writing this story was one of the most fascinating period of my life. I got to explore different world never had visited ever. I got to live lives other than mine. Is anything more adventurous than this! Writing, for me, is a medium of exploring the things and ideas that fascinates me, both known and unknown. It is both a passion, as well as part of my spiritual journey. It is a lot  more than I can ever explain to you.

Q. The book you have written, The Devil's Gate is a never-before-seen form of fiction. How did this really unusual idea strike you?
Just like that – out of nowhere! You ask me the most fascinating place in the world, and I’ll say it is – Nowhere! For it is from here most innovative ideas emerge into the consciousness. Creativity is a strange process. You think more, you get less. You go into the state of shoonya – a brilliant idea may be just around the corner!

Q. How did you go about planning the peculiarities and character sketches in the novel? We are pretty sure Dug and Katy have demanded a lot of your attention!

Not actually. Katy and Dug, somehow, came very naturally and easy to me. I had cat and dogs as pet during my childhood. May be, this made it easy for me to demarcate their characters. The most difficult part was creating a story which was unique, engaging as well as emotionally appealing at the same time.

Q. Your novel is getting nothing less than superstar ratings. You must be basking in the glory of your success!

I am overwhelmed, to say the least. I knew that readers would like the story. But I was a bit sceptical about the response of critics, since it was an out-of-box story. So, in a way, it was a huge confidence booster for me, which will help me in taking risks in the future too.

Q. So, do you plan on continuing this story, or would you rather narrate a new story altogether?

I think I’ll write a drama or a drama/mystery/thriller next. I am churning some ideas at the moment, but nothing has taken shape as of yet. About the sequel, I may write it at a later point if enough readers ask for it.

Q. What do you have in store for your increasing reader base?

As I told you I am playing around with some ideas of different genres. Only thing I can say at this moment is, you can expect what I think is the best thing in the world - A Good Story!

Thank you for such a wonderful Interview!
